Average wait times at hospital in Allegheny County show the time patients can expect to spend. Actual wait times will depend on many factors, such as severity of the injury, time of day, and staffing. Patients are quickly evaluated as part of a triage process, so the most severe cases can be treated first. Depending on the hospital, this initial wait can run from a few minutes to over an hour. The times below also include wait times for initial treatment, since there can be many delays after the triage process. Choose an ER with a shorter wait time to get seen more quickly.

These are the average time from entering the ER to being admitted to the hospital by a doctor. In a busy ER, patients will be seen by a triage nurse first. Then the wait time will vary by severity, and how busy the ER is at the time of day. Patients with less serious problems could have substantially longer waits.

Mount Nittany Medical Center: "I took my 44 yr old son to the Er this morning. He has been staying with me for a few weeks. He suffered an injury in March causing him to be unable to work anymore. He did not have any insurance at the time. He was told initially that it was a severely damaged rotator cuff and other muscle injuries. He applied for Medicaid and was finally approved a few days ago. The last couple of days he has stumbled and in attempting to catch himself, he hurts his shoulder even more. I think his center of balance is off due to the way he hugs his arm against his torso. Long story short, he allowed me to take him in hoping to get some kind of relief. All they did was an x-ray saying he did not break any bones. It was a bit of a frustrating experience. He asked the nurse at the nurses station to please bring him his discharge papers so we could go home. After hearing her using rather unprofessional language (his room was directly across the hall from the nurses station) he did not hesitate to use similar language with her. She told him she would bring it as soon as the Dr signed off on it. The Dr already indicated that she had signed off. The nurse them treated him very unprofessionally. She was very nasty and mean spirited in her treatment with him. I know it's not her fault that he didn't get more relief than just being told what is not wrong with your shoulder, but nurses should exhibit a much more compassionate, caring demeanor. She just gave us the impression that she hates her job and would rather not deal with people." - Ruth

Lehigh Valley Hospital - Dickson City: "Was very impressive when I was there for an emergency in Jan. 2023.
Recently took my son there on 3 Dec. 2025, for pains he was having.
Place has really deteriorated. The best way I can put it is that
it's been "Scrantonianized". Noticeably lacking in efficiency and
professionalism. Doctor on duty was like a surly clerk at a 7/11.
Would not recommend."
