Wellington Regional Medical Center: "Total thumbs down " - Stephanie

Wellington Regional Medical Center: "My mom Esperanza Perez Melendez was taken by paramedics from my home on 12/22/2020 around 10 am. I was told by paramedics that someone will call me to let me know when was okay to go see my mom. I waited and no one called. I called the ED around 11:30 am and the nurse told me that I could come and see my mom. When I got to the ED, they told me that things have change and I needed to call the nurse. When I called, I was notified that my mom was covid positive and I was not allowed to see her. I ask about her status and the nurse said they were going to do a CT scan of her head and spine and someone will call me with the results. I called again two hours later around 1 pm and the nurse was unavailable but I had the opportunity to speak to my mom without knowing it was going to be the last time. I called again 2 hours later asking for my mother status, they told me that my mom was very unstable and the doctor and the nurse were in the room with her. They said they were going to transfer my mom to ICU and someone will call me. I called two hours later to ICU, the nurse was unavailable, and the secretary put me on hold for an hour. I hung up and called again, the secretary told me that the nurse, charge nurse and everybody else was busy and nobody could give an update. Last time I called was around 8pm, they told me that the doctor and the nurse were in the room with my mom and her blood pressure was very low and they were trying to stabilize her. I asked to please call me to let me know how she was doing. No one called. I received a call at 1 am that my mom passed of cardiac arrest. Words can’t describe the pain that I felt that day. I was in so much pain that I didn’t ask no questions. I called ICU two days later asking questions about my mom’s dead. The ICU charge nurse wasn’t very helpful. She kept talking about HIPPA and how she couldn’t give me any information. I explain how my mom was covid positive and I was in quarantine myself since my mom lived with me but she still would not give me no information. My husband ended up emailing the CEO and that’s when the manager of ICU and the admitting physician called me. I was told by the physician that no one told him that my mother had a next of kin and that is the reason why he never called me before. That day I didn’t receive not even one call from nurses or physicians. My mom was alone and she needed me. I am writing this because I work in a hospital and I never received before this much poor service. Your staff have no feelings or empathy for what family members feel. I requested my mothers belongings and they can’t even find that. My mother was a human being and who know what kind of treatment she received while I wasn’t there to protect her. " - Celimar
